Santiago Abascal's speech in Girona: the proposal of mass deportations causes controversy

As part of his latest speech in Catalonia, the leader of the Spanish Vox party, Santiago Abascal, announced a proposal for mass deportations in response to increased illegal immigration. Abascal expressed his position during a rally in the city of Salt (Girona province), known for the high percentage of immigrants in the population, who make up 37% according to Idescat.

At the event, which was also attended by Vox Catalan parliamentary candidates Ignacio Garriga and Alberto Tarradas, Abascal stressed the need for a tough migration policy for Catalonia and the whole of Spain. "This is what Catalonia needs, despite the threats and insults against us," he added, recalling an incident in 2021 when protesters threw objects and food at him during his speech in Salta.

Abascal's comment caused a wide resonance among the public and political forces of the country, exacerbating the discussion about methods of regulating migration flows and measures to combat illegal immigration.
